MARYANN THOMPSON ARCHITECTS

The Atlantic Center for the Arts offers artists residency programs in a lush Florida jungle setting. The Center offers residencies to writers, dancers, visual artists, composers, choreographers, and actors. Past participants include Allen Ginsberg, Lukas Foss, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Albee, Alice Aycock, and other nationally known artists.

The program includes a black-box theater, painting and sculpting studios, recording studios, a dance studio, a library and various support spaces. The design includes six buildings interwoven into an indigenous Florida jungle landscape, linked by an elevated boardwalk, and made of wood, glass, and metal.

The project completed an intensive value engineering process, and the design team worked closely with the construction manager to refine building costs so that the project came in below budget. Construction was completed in 1997.

The project has received two State of Florida grants, the 1998 American Institute of Architects National Honor Award for Design Excellence, a 1997 I.D. Magazine Annual Design Distinction Award, the 1996 Boston Society of Architects Design Honor Award, a 1995 American Wood Council Honor Award, the 1995 Progressive Architecture Citation Award, the 1993 Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Award. The project has been featured in several publications including the September 2001 issue of A+U, the June 1997 issue of Architectural Record, the June 1996 issue of Architecture, the February 1994 issue of Progressive Architecture, the March 1994 issue of INSITE magazine, and the November 1994 issue of Architectural Record. The project was included in the Norton guide to 250 key 20th Century American buildings.

Nice to be shelf-ish

From the MOMA collection to we find pieces from Joe Colombo (Italian, 1930-1971). Tube Chair of Nesting and Combinable Elements. 1955. PVC plastic, polyurethane foam, and fabric. Manufactured by Flexform, Italy. Gift of the manufacturer, from Gubi, The Hive, by American designer Chris Ferebee, is a new freestanding module shelving system that can be put together in countless combinations. Winning several international awards, The Hive is founded in the innovative technique combining the strength and flexibility of the metal and the warm beautiful finish of the wood. The Hive is made with a solid aluminium core coated with genuine wood. The Hive is available in American walnut treated with organic citrus oil, which enables the wood to breathe. Being a module system, you can start out with only a couple of elements and later add on! The Hive is produced in Denmark by GUBI....

and lastly Kisskalt designs, an important objective for his business, is flexibility and they will gladly respond to special requests, as long as these are technically possible and feasible.

Jellyfish chair and ottoman

We really like this chair+ottoman. We probably end buying 2 chairs and one ottoman to be used as a table.

from DWR;

Designer
Wiel Arets for Quinze & Milan
Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
UV stable with a weight resistance of 350lbs.
Architect Wiel Arets calls Jellyfish (2005) a "modern reclining lounger" because of how its gently shaped base gives it a relaxing, subtle movement. The result is a dynamic seating experience in which the sitter, chair and environment all interact. This was the goal of the designer, who wanted a lounge chair that encouraged active use, while also bringing a clean, straightforward aesthetic to its surroundings. A handy sidekick to the chair is the Jellyfish Ottoman/Side Table that can be used as a footrest or for holding drinks. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use, Jellyfish is UV stable and has a weight resistance of 350lbs.

Emeco: industrial becomes household item.

It doesn't mattter where you look this days.... from a country style dining room to Martha's new grey kitchen. Chances are you will see them. The Emeco Navy 1006 chair.
Made entirely of aluminum with 77 steps, (there's a movie that Eames Demetrios did about that... really nice) the chair that was born as a collaboration between the Electric Machine and Equipment Co., Alcoa and the US NAVY (and some, including me think the Charles Eames has something to do with it) for a seawirthy seating appliance to be used by the military and 60 years later, by Law and Order staff, iRobot, House and every TV show that has an interrogation room or jail scene.
These chairs are bomb proof and the later collaborations with Stark, really put them in the map. Ther are guaranteed for 100 years!

Talking about Murakami...

Carlos Enriquez who lives in Caracas, Venezuela, is an artist that has taken manga in his own hands creating sculptures based on the 70's icon Astro Boy. His work is part of the permanent collection of Caracas' MOMA and some galleries around the world.

Takashi Murakami

I'm not realli into the whole manga scene, but Takashi Murakami deserves my 2 minutes of blogging. (b. 1963), He is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking Japanese artists of the 1990s. His work ranges from cartoony paintings to quasi-minimalist sculptures to giant inflatable balloons to performance events to factory-produced watches, T-shirts, and other products, many emblazoned with his signature character, Mr. DOB.
In addition to his work as an artist, Takashi Murakami is a curator, entrepreneur, and a student of contemporary Japanese society. In 2000, Murakami curated an exhibition of Japanese art titled Superflat, which acknowledged a movement toward mass-produced entertainment and its effects on contemporary aesthetics. Murakami is also internationally recognized for his collaboration with designer Marc Jacobs to create handbags and other products for the Louis Vuitton fashion house.

Takashi Murakami's work has been exhibited in prestigious museums all over the world, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and a recent solo retrospective exhibition at the Bard College Museum of Art. Through his work, Murakami has played with these oppositions in East and West, past and present, high art and low culture while remaining consistently amusing and accessible. His work morphs the worlds of popular contemporary Japanese cartoons and historic Japanese painting (he is classically trained, with a Ph.D. in the traditional nihon-ga style). His recurring character, Mr. DOB, appears on t-shirts, posters, key-chains, etc. world-wide and has even come to life in the form of one of these 3-D sculptures. Murakami has also curated "Super Flat" an exhibition of contemporary Japanese artists.

We provide you with factory built kit components for the exterior shell which is built on site by a general contractor.

The LV series kit homes first started with the LV home (Standard LV); it is the second LV prototype designed and built by Rocio Romero. Romero's other LV unit designs have been developed to provide additional options while maintaining the same style and design as the original LV. All of the units have a standard width of 25'-1", but vary in size because of the difference in the length. We have three standard types of foundations for you to choose from: crawlspace, basement, and/ or slab on grade. Each unit can be customized to meet your specific taste and needs, you can choose from several exterior siding options as well as reconfigure interior and exterior walls. Me, myshelf and I

We really like modular furniture and flooring, but modular shelving, like the How Does Your Shelving Grow? set, is definitely one of our favorite manifestations of the trend. Because the shelves are all individual units, they can be arranged to form one solid, conventional looking piece, or scattered to all corners of the room. These shelves are made from steel with a powder coat finish in grey, white or khaki (green). They come in multiple sizes and prices vary depending on both the size and how many units you need.

Ink blot plates

Sold in a set of four, these lovely Ink Blot Plates can be the entertainment as well as the tableware at your next dinner party. Each plate has a unique blot at its center, along with a "haiku-like saying," such as "Dueling Roosters", "Compassion Among Species" and "Unlikely Event." The sayings are meant not to caption the blots, but to provoke further thought about what the designs might contain. The plates are made of porcelain in the US and were designed by Kathleen Walsh .

One additional bonus of using these at a party is that your guests will be sure to clean their plates to reveal the ink blot design in full.

P40 Articulated Chair

This super adjustable lounge chair may be super pricey, but it's also super swank. (And yes, we're too lazy to think of another word besides 'super' — hey, it's Friday.) Designed by Osvaldo Borsani way back in 1954, the P40 Articulated Chair ($6,500) features an adjustable headrest, movable rubber armrests, an extending footrest, and a bunch of joints that can be folded numerous ways.

EamesCollector.com

By Steven Cabella:

Since 1978, I have been a serious collector and historian of objects designed or produced by Ray and Charles Eames, the Eames Office, and the Herman Miller Company. During this time I have seen the interest in these designers work grow immensely and I know that there are many other people who appreciate Twentieth Century Modern Design and who share my enthusiasm for the Eames' creative contributions.

This site is an Eames fansite, in which we will share the more obscure facts, details and connections of all things Eames. This site is based on the research and collecting I have done of Eames things for the last 23 years.

Window sill platform planter

In the same fashion that we did our balcony planter (leftover wood) we created this window sill platform planter. I still have plenty of those weath grass seeds! The only difference is that the wood inside is sealed with silicone as i didn't want an accident to happen. It adds a touch of green and helps bringing the outside in.

Modern objects...

I like their mission statement:

Minimalist furniture born of craft, form and function. Our modern furniture collection features the angular XLOUNGE chair and the popular HIDEY wall table. Each piece of wood is selected for it's unique color, rich grain and remarkable character. Every piece of furniture is handmade – one at a time – with the highest craftsmanship in our Seattle workshop by designer, Jesse Doquilo.
Limited production = high collector value. Each piece is dated, numbered, signed and registered. Collaborate with us to create a custom commission.

modernism + craftsmenship = modernobject

Artist Statement

In my work I distort and manipulate the figure, shedding what I find unnecessary, creating simple, primitive forms rich in ambiguity and mood. I create my work by exploring new and old ideas, stemming from my imagination and curiosity. In return, my hopes are that the pieces engage the viewer's own imagination, bringing forth their own thoughts and interpretations.

Bang for your buck? don't think so...

But they are top shelf material.

For Bang & Olufsen, design is far more than mere styling of existing products; rather it is the expression of an idea, the concept made conscious. In this sense, design unites aesthetics and function, creating unique, highly differentiated products that are not limited by the time of their creation or the space in which they are placed. The quality of finish and craftsmanship of a Bang & Olufsen product encourages you to approach and touch. Our uncompromising attitude to quality is the reason we create products and experiences of real and lasting value, with a quality that is much more than is expected. Viewing and listening experiences that continue to surprise and delight every time you watch television or listen to music, and technology that works for you, not the other way around; that is why Bang & Olufsen is all you ever will need or want for your home entertainment.

Cherner chair

Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1947 to 1949. At the same time he also began his practice, embarking on a lifetime exploration of multidisciplinary design. more

The Cherner Chair Company

Cherner's sons, Benjamin and Thomas formed the Cherner Chair Company in 1999 to manufacture and market some of the most influential and well recognized designs from their father's portfolio spanning almost 50 years. As an architect and furniture designer, Ben was constantly asked by other architects to reissue his father's designs. Together, they have answered the call and brought their father's most popular designs back into production.

AT kid's month... The minivan is dead. Long live the SUV!

With the latest news that Ford is droping the Windstar from the lineup and scratching out any minivan-esque plans for the future, parents (or more like, mothers) are faced with a mild dilema about kid's transportation this days... Yes, I know minivans are awesome for hauling kids but they are hiddeous devices. When you go to soccer practice next weekend, see the parking lot and you will see what I'm talking about. More moms are switching to full blown SUV's and crossover vehicles. (Crossovers are vehicles that give you the commanding view of an SUV with the handling of a sport car, like i.e. Infiniti FX35, Nissan Murano and Mazda CX7 to name a few) but again, I guarantee that your neighbor's son is going to be happy when you carpool him on your brand new "safety yellow" Hummer H3!

The Retro Slats can add an architectural element to a wall. Available in a 19” by 24” section, the slats can easily run vertically down a standard 8-foot wall. While metals have been used in architectural applications for centuries, designers continue to search for new methods of enhancing their finished appearance. Forgoing, pounding, forming, etching, grinding, and polishing have long been the mainstays in metal finishing UNTIL NOW!

Metal Art, has developed an exciting new process of engraving highly reflective patterns into the surface of decorative metals, There patterns have thousands of microscopic reflective facets per square inch, resulting in a three dimensional appearance with such depth and brilliance never before achieved by any other process.

This unique process is computer guided which allows the patterns to be scaled to fit any application, and also insures that each sheet is an identical match. Patterns can be tiled over large areas with exact registration along joints providing a seamless appearance. Patterns can be also be mixed within one sheet (e.g.. On a vertically oriented panel the bottom 36" could be one pattern and the upper portion another, replicating a wainscot/wall covering, but in a single sheet of highly reflective metal!)

shoprelish.com

from the site:
"Relish was founded late 2001 by Trisha Guido and David Boyd. After 10+ years in technology sales and marketing, Trisha wanted to start a more creative and personally satisfying venture. One that would allow her to make a small difference, yet satisfy a continual yearning for travel and culture abroad. After many discussions and dinners at Mario’s Bohemian in San Francisco, the plan was hatched to start a home and personal accessories store featuring organic modern designs from around the world that were mostly unavailable in the US. While working and traveling in London and Europe, they started finding designers, craftspeople and small manufacturers producing beautiful objects of high quality. With David’s background in product and furniture design, and Trisha’s sales, marketing and sense of individual style, they started creating a collection of unique and timeless designs from Europe, Asia and the US. Now all they needed was a place to set up shop and a name…

After many soul searching travels and discussions, the two fell in love with Portland, Oregon on their second visit. They found the natural beauty and charm of the city, along with a healthy art and design community eager for fresh ideas, to be the perfect place to launch the business. But, what to call it?

A Condensed Oxford’s English Dictionary, complete with magnifying glass, found at a local garage sale, provided hours of eye straining name searching. Finally, late one night, the word "relish" pops up. "To provide with something relishing. To please, gratify, delight. To feel. To enjoy, take pleasure in. To have a liking for something". Relish. Perfect.

We truly hope you will relish the beautiful objects we’ve collected to enliven your home and your life. Whenever in Portland, please stop by and have a look...."

Copa cabana

Do not call it a shed!

Until recently, options for increasing living space were limited. On the one hand, adding a room to a structure involved obtaining permits and performing costly remodeling. On the other, it implied purchasing an ornate, synthetic structure at a hardware store.

Modern Cabana believes design is central to any addition. Moreover, accessory structures should be affordable, solidly built and easy to install. Its flagship space, The Cabana, was designed for that purpose.

A versatile addition designed to accommodate buyers seeking value, modernism and quality, The Cabana can be used as a guest cottage, a pool house, artist studio, home office, urban penthouse, desert hideaway, fishing cabin, workshop, sound studio, yoga studio, kids playhouse, or exercise room.

Designed for year-round use -weather permitting- the Cabana’s elegant and timeless appearance is backed with substance. Functional, robust, and weatherized construction, materials of the highest grade and a professional building team ensure that each Cabana is built to last.

Bill Stumpf, passes away at 70

To all you dot-commers who spent tons of money on truckloads of Aeron Ergonomic Office Chairs back in the day, please stand up and salute Bill Stumpf, who died late last month at the age of 70. This industrial designer was made famous by his 1994 Aeron chair, which has made the drudgery of an eight hour work day a fair bit more bearable. Even from the beginning Stumpf's chef d'oeuvre earned it a place in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one month before it was released to the public at a trade show in September 1994. More recently, in an interview with The New York Times, Bill Dowell, a former partner of Stumpf's at Herman Miller, recalled that Stumpf delayed production of the first Aeron chair by a whole year because a woman testing the chair had to get up to adjust it. Stumpf will be posthumously presented with the National Design Award in Product Design on October 18 in New York.

Congratulations David!

Well, David was the winner of HGTV's DesignStar. I couldn't be happier for him and I hope they star the show soon. really looking forward to watch it. He was a winner from the beginning, bringing to the table creativity and a hands-on approach to the challenges, I thought Alice was more of a "buy-at-the-store-and-arrange-furniture" kind of girl but her charm was really warm and sincere. I think they pick the best ones for the finals. Congrats again!
