This project is one of a series of gut renovations completed for several members of one family living in the same building in Chelsea. The primary element of the largest apartment is an ebonized oak and steel stair that connects communal space on the first floor of the triplex to a private second floor and a third, outdoor space at the roof. A new windowed bulkhead was added at the roof, bringing light down the stairwell and into the lower two floors. The kitchen, fabricated from stainless steel, and the stairwell enclosure, crafted from Cocobolo wood, appear as boxed insertions on the ground floor. This language is repeated in the Master Suite on the second floor, as storage units of the same Cocobolo wood protrude into the stairwell, defining rooms.
