Pendant lamp from used tubes!

Wow! this guys are amazing! I can see the potential DIY here! I need an massive industrial lamp for a living room corner and I think this is the ticket!

Tolomeo lamp. now our bedside table's lamps

We got 2 Tolomeo mini lamps for our bedside. We used the buy one get the other 1/2 off offer they had 'til january 31st. That was a good deal. Artemide shipped for free and it only took 5 or 6 days. We went with the Mini instead of the micro because of the switch placement. The mini has the switch on the head assembly, making easier to turn on and off while sitting/resting on the bed. The micro has an inline switch on the power cable, so you have to reach for the cord, pull, locate and turn on/off. Very annoying. Packaging is very impressive and the base is heavy as hell! Quality is beyond what you can expect. The only "problem" was the amount of stickers (with the warning labels/maximum wattage/artemide/inspected by) that this thing has. I spent 1 hour clearing the 2 lamps of stickers and cleaning the glue residue. The contrast between the non glossy parts with the high polished arms and base makes this an spectacular piece. The Tolomeo set compliment in a very nice way the Modern Fan Co "Cirrus hugger" aluminum fan we got from YLightning. It gives a spot ligh but also, due to the opening on the back of the reflector, the lapm also provide some level of ambiance illumination. I want to buy a micro for my computer desk soon. That will complete my Tolomeo fetish.

Designer of the week

Patricia Urquiola
The Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, a complete unknown in her own country, is warranted by experts to become one of the big names in architecture and interior design in the future.
She was born in Oviedo and studied at the Faculdad de Arquitectura de Madrid as well as graduating from the Milan Polytechnic in 1989, with a thesis supervised by Achille Castiglioni.
"Professionally I was born in Italy, from masters like Bruno Munari, the intellectual father of the Milanese school. At the same time I consider myself very Spanish: an Asturian of Basque descent".
After graduating in '80, she started working for Maddalena De Padova's "product development office", eventually being put in charge of it, and there she met Vico Magistretti, with whom she was later to work.
Magistretti and Castiglioni, two key figures in Milanese design, influenced her outlook and led her to cultivate her talents and abilities.
In 1998 she began working with Moroso: her upholstered furniture, elegant and comfortable, captured not only the attention of insiders but also the general public.

DIY solution by our local friend Reed

This is what our local friend Reed did as a solution for a slatted door. He didn't find what he was looking for and decided to take it into is own hands. The result is a custom, hand made door with the look and exact dimensions he needed. That is one great looking gate/door. Congrats. He is also the owner of the Florida Modern Blog and was one of the first posters here in Blue Ant Studio.

Designer of the week...

Jens Risom - Unlike architect Alvar Aalto or Hans Wegner whose international influence remained rooted in Finland and Denmark respectively, Jens Risom emigrated from Europe to the U.S. when he was just 23 years of age. Like other Scandinavian designers such as Josef Frank and Kaare Klint, Risom continued to honor tradition in modern design, combining old and new in highly original ways.
Jens Risom’s career has spanned nearly sixty years. He began his study of design in the Copehagen workshop of Kaare Klint in 1935 and joined Ernst Kuhn’s architectural office in 1938, where he designed furniture and interiors. In 1939, Risom emigrated to the U.S. and in 1941 designed the first chair manufactured by Knoll. Risom described the chair as "very basic, very simple, inexpensive, easy to make." The chair was constructed with a birch wood frame and, because of wartime materials constraints, cheap but strong army surplus webbing and has inspired countless imitations.

Risom continued to create simple, well-crafted modern furniture with Knoll and George Jensen, but established his own design studio, Jens Risom Design, in 1946. The studio was acquired by Dictaphone in 1970 and in 1973, Risom became chief executive of Design Control, a Connecticut based design consultancy.

Happy President's day!

Please enjoy your long weekend. I know we did!

Forget about your home stereo. This is the new way.

Well, I sold my Nakamichi Soundspace 3 on ebay and made a set up for what I think, I will replace your home stereo in the near future. The set up: an intel mac mini core duo with 1 gig of ram, all the photos, music, movies we have, a wireless apple mouse, wireless keyboard, apple remote control for Front Row, Wireless network so I can check email, web or even transfer files wirelessly from my main computer on the bedroom and stream music/movies/photos from the main computer if the data is not the same from one computer to the other. The monitor is the Apple Cinema Display 23". More than enough to watch the itunes library, browse the net for recipes or jokes, and watch DVD's if needed. It's mounted on the wall using a cantilever bracket secured to a metal stud behind a wall. The set up is clean looking and a neat trick of placing a blackboard on the credenza in order to keep the cables visible to a minimum was a plus. SOunds comes courtesy of JBL technology and the spot speaker system. One subwoofer and two smaller speakers that I placed under the credenza so the doors can remain closed aqnd no speakers are visible on the top. I couldn't be happier. Sound is crisp, the display is amazing (I know I could geta cheaper/bigger even better display for half of what spend... but it doesn't says apple on it and it's not made of aluminum...) wireless reception is great and we have a redundant backup of all our music. Even Lisa Loeb. I sold all my CD on CD warehouse and got enough money to take my wife and daughter to dinner for several weekends!!!!! Please enjoy the pictures.

DIY wire railings for the stair-part 2

Then, the next project was to tackle the stairs. We removed the slabs, but left the main banister since it was "modern looking" by itself. I patched all the holes from the gazillion screws that secured the slabs, sanded (what a pain), primed, 4 coats of matte black finish and 3 coats of polyurethane. I'm tired just of reading this. Bought all the hardware at homedepot, 150 Lbs 1/8" steel wire and 300 lbs turnbuckles. 4hrs later, we completed the task. Really nice and contemporary lofty look. We are very happy with the end result. Too bad I saw two days after I was done, the semi-tutorial of SplatGirl on flicker about wire stairs... Please enjoy the pics.
