Lenorat
This lamp-cum-vase is an attempt to fuse nature and technology. Made of acrylic resin, Lenorat's outer shell holds a glass vase that can be filled with water and real flowers. Six LEDs at the base of the object illuminate both container and contents. The base is a detachable acrylic-resin component that houses the LED fitting. Three LEDs light the base and three direct beams upwards, towards vase and flowers.
Architectural Photographer Julius Shulman
Julius Shulman is, many experts would agree, the greatest living architectural photographer. Since the 1930s, he's photographed the work of virtually every modern architect.
Yet among his tens of thousands of images, there is one that stands out -- a photograph taken in 1960 of a modern house by architect Pierre Konig overlooking the winking lights of Los Angeles.
The photo is called "Case Study House #22, Los Angeles, 1960. Pierre Koenig, Architect." It's a clear night and two young women sit and chat in a living room hanging over the side of a canyon. In the background, streetlights chart the grid of the city streets far below.
That well-known photo is now reproduced on banners that are hanging all over Los Angeles. The Getty Museum, which purchased a major part of Shulman's photographic collection, is exhibiting selections a show that runs through January.
Agaricon Table Lamp
Agaricon Table Lamp
The futuristic Agaricon table lamp, designed by Ross Lovegrove, is a fun lamp, characterized by a uniquely-shaped ribbed polycarbonate body. A curved extruded aluminum ring, perimetral to the lid, is the user’s interface. By gently touching or pressing it quickly with the fingers, or suddenly loosing the hold, you can progressively modulate the light. The electronic sensor dimmer allows both the on/off function and dimming. The lamp body and its “lid” are made with high pressure injection-moulded polycarbonate. Integrated sensor dimmer.

The trunk!
When is a tree not a tree? Or is a tree still a tree if its chopped to a stump, and then covered in polycarbonate that is screened with cow prints? I’m not sure exactly - but these were strangely appealing… instead of making that next tree into firewood, coat it in steel and use it as a stool, side table, or a coffee table base? “The inside is the European oak wood dried in a special dryer for 2 months. Then it’s covered in steel sheet or in polycarbonates with silk screened images of tree, grass or leaves. The bottom surface of the trunk has a felt protection, so it doesn’t scratch the floor.” Produced by Malafor Small Laboratory of Forms. For more info, contact Gosia I. Eames Splint by Evans, 1943
The Eames Molded Plywood Splint US Navy in 1943
The famous icon of American Modernism, design by Charles and Ray Eames for the U.S. Government to transport wounded soldiers off the field. The precursor to the early plywood furniture.
Produced for the United States Navy by the Evans Products Company, Molded Plywood Division for injured servicemen. These splints are truly beautiful and an important milestone on the Eames journey.
A little bit of history:
The last thing the landlord expected when he rented a modest Richard Neutra-designed apartment on Strathmore Avenue in the Los Angeles suburb of Westwood to a newly married couple in 1941 was for the spare bedroom to be turned into a workshop. No sooner had Charles and Ray Eames moved in than they kitted out that room with a home-made moulding machine into which they fed the woods and glues that Charles sneaked home from his day job as a set architect on MGM movies like Mrs Miniver. It was on this machine - dubbed the "Kazam!" after the saying "Ala Kazam!" because the plywood formed in the mould like magic - that the Eames produced for the Navy, their first mass-manufactured product, a plywood leg splint based that kept an injured leg stable during transport, on a plaster mould of Charles' own leg. The splint is beautiful, elegant, simple, and functional, and it solved a problem in a way that worked for everybody. One of the most important things about that object is that when you see it, you immediately know what it is. The design makes it instantly recognizable. Too often, we confuse design with marketability -- a product with a label that tries to tell us that the product is a "good" design.
A year later, the US Navy placed an order for 5,000 splints and the Eames moved their workshop out of their apartment into a rented studio on nearby Santa Monica Boulevard.
The Eames splint is recognizable by its simplicity -- a three-dimensional outline of a space created by a leg. It achieves its intent and its function with no extraneous moves; it's anti-rococo. But simplicity does not mean simplistic -- something that's simplistic is made without thought.
Designer of the mid week! - Florence Knoll
Florence Schust met Hans Knoll in 1941. Knoll had established the Hans G. Knoll Furniture Company in New York, producing a range of modern furniture designed by Jens Risom. Florence was an architect who had studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, at the Architectural Association, London and under Mies van der Rohe at the Armory Institute, Chicago. Florence Schust had also worked for Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius.
In 1943, she was taken on as an interior designer for Hans Knoll and re-directed the company’s product line from the Scandinavian style to International style. She also married Hans Knoll and as a partner in Knoll Associates, Inc., Knoll Textiles, Inc. and Knoll International, continued to run the business after her husband’s death.
Florence Knoll’s own designs are reserved, cool and angular, reflecting her modernist sensibility and perhaps the influence of childhood friend Eero Saarinen. While she is modest about her own accomplishments, it was through Florence that Knoll began to manufacture modern sculptural furniture such as the Tulip chair by Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi’s coffee table and Harry Bertoia’s Diamond chair.
In 1948, Knoll also acquired the rights to produce Mies van der Rohe’s furniture designs. During the 1950’s Florence Knoll continued to fashion the distinctive Knoll look, overseeing all aspects of the corporate identity, from showroom design to graphic design. She also recruited Swiss designer Herbert Matter to create a series of compelling posters advertising Knoll products and the Knoll logo.
In 1967, the Knoll identity was strengthened by Massimo Vignelli, who designed the bold graphics that represent Knoll today. Knoll is one of the most respected and third largest manufacturers of contract furnishings in the world. Florence Knoll, set the company on the path that has led to its prominent position as a highly innovative industry leader today. "I design the gap-fillers," she once said. Clearly, she did much more.

Panton Junior
The Panton Chair has always been a favourite of children. They not only like its bright, cheerful colours and smooth curves, but the fact that it is as much fun to play with as it is to sit on. Soon after its introduction, Verner Panton began to consider the idea of producing a child-size version of the chair together with Vitra.
What was financially unfeasible over 35 years ago is now possible: Vitra introduces the Panton Junior, whose production is based on the original plans of Verner Panton. Identical to the regular model with regard to material and shape, the Panton Junior is approximately 25 percent smaller and available in seven different colours. This makes it an ideal chair for children in pre-school and primary grades.
Material: batch-dyed polypropylene, matt surface.

Friso Kramer Revolt Chair
Many aspects of the Revolt were regarded as extremely innovative when it was introduced back in 1953 and it has won a permanent place for itself both in the business world and in Dutch living rooms.
The Revolt chair is at home in every environment. After the chair had been out of stock for a number of years, Ahrend reintroduced it in 2004. And once again it has proven that a product that still has something to offer just gets better as the years go by. Revolt is available in black and in white.
