The Slat House of Marina del Rey

My deep love for wooden slats started when I purchased my Nelson Bench. From that moment on, I started to understand and appreciate what's going on with this kind of building technique. The slats provide a very rigid support, while at the same time, create an invisible view at the right angle. Light flows right thru them. It has a floating effect, allowing a rain of light to pours inside and create an ever changing cast of shadows during the course of the day. I can just imagine how this home will look during full moon on a clear sky...

This is the home of David Feldman, the co-founder and CEO of YLighting.com, the largest online lighting retailer. YLighting (http://www.ylighting.com/) specializes in modern lighting fixtures for the home.  Since YLghting launched in 2001, YLighting has become a leader in the industry.  Renowned designers from across the globe consult with Dave for advice on which trends will succeed in the modern lighting market.
Dave's enthusiasm for modern home décor extends beyond his professional life. He works and lives modern. Dave's Marina Del Rey home was once a normal shingle and tile house on a small 35 x 90 lot. When Dave's family decided to move into their new beachside home, they faced one big problem. Due to building codes the home could not be rebuilt and maintain its ocean view. To preserve their beautiful ocean view the original structure had to remain on the property. After many renovations, and a remodel designed by
David Hertz Architects, the home is now known as the "Slat House" of Marina Del Rey

Some of the Slat House's significant features include:
• Slats of Ipe wood on the exterior
• The Slats give the impression of elevation without increasing the size of the home
• Dynamic play with light both inside and out. On the interior light and shadow reiterate the slats throughout the home.
• Repetition of the linear components throughout: the stairs, the light, the shadows, the slats.
• At night the light casts outward from the slats giving the home a unique glow.
• The slats facing the ocean slide open to provide ocean views.
• The slats extend upwards on the rooftop to provide a railing.
• Consistent with building requirements.

All the light fixtures featured in the house are from YLighting and some of the furniture are from YLighting's sister site: www.zwello.com

I hope you enjoy the pics!

re-purposing the baby gate

Nooooooooo! good bye baby gate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the piece of DIY furniture that made blueantstudio famous! see the part 2 here (part one is missing the pics.. : (

So Isabella, now 3, knows her way around the stairs even while carrying large amounts of stuffed animals in one hand. So baby gate had to go... but I didn't want it to become landfill, so my only solution was to re-use it as a AC unit cover.

I think it came out really nice...

square cowhide rug

The best of both worlds!

Remember my dilema here? Yes, I liked the cowhide rug and Maria liked the flor® square tiles. The problem with the flor® tiles was the dust magnets they are (the specific type we had) and that we didn't feel like vacuuming every 30 seconds.
Thanks to my friend Roland, we had a chance to test drive the natural shape cowhide he smuggled back from Nicaragua. It was a little on the stiff side and the shape didn't fly thru the committee. So I was back to "square one" (no pun intended!)... then, I discovered picked by hand and their awesome selection and reasonable prices. I didn't want to pay what pop cows was charging. ($2592!!!!)
Anyway, the rug came direct from Argentina and it's super soft and great quality. I couldn't be happier... and my marriage is safe. again.

help, I have a headache!

While some health problems are large, complicated and frightening, most aren't the end of the world. A kind word and a little help can get you on your way again.
Help Remedies was created to make solving simple health issues simple. We find the best solution there is, and take away everything else. By stripping away some of the complexity and fear mongering of the health industry, we hope to make the category friendlier and more accessible, and in doing so empower people to make their own health decisions.
We think a little help, honesty and kindness will go a long way.

Fredericia Stingray Rocking Chair Makassa

An eye-catching almost futuristic interpretation of the classic rocking chair. A modern, dynamic piece of furniture built for comfort and which accommodates a variety of sitting positions. The shape of the rocking chair was partially inspired by a shell. This gives it a beautiful organic design which is raw on the outside but smooth and refined on the inside. A piece of furniture that provides a unique experience of inner tranquillity. The steel frame has been constructed without any transverse lines thus accentuating the floating appearance of the chair. The shell is made of vacuum-suctioned plastic and comes in black or white.
