CaseFile storage system

Matthew Hilton has created the CaseFile system that works as both storage and as a utility unit. The system is made up from semi wall mounted black powder coated steel uprights, solid circular crossbars and adjustable feet. CaseFile is available in a number of different configurations using horizontal components from standard shelving, a 2-drawer unit, a bureau or a media unit. All components come in veneered walnut or oak. The 2-drawer unit has steel handles and the bureau component comes with additional vertical interior storage dividers and a drop down working desk.

We were interested in looking at the relationship between the new designed objects and old existing objects. What differentiates objects from one another within a category - were does the found object end and when is the product redesigned? Recognition is part of the in understanding of a product; design is influenced by and built upon already existing objects and ideas.

AJAR

Anonymous objects that we have changed; added something, taken them apart and put it back together in a new way or made something of an objects obvious characteristic disappear. We exhibit cupboards which show the reflection of a room at a previous moment, a standard lamp globe with hidden objects inside that make shade decorations appear on its surface and lit light bulbs appear to be flying without any visible cord. The highlight on the surface of glass is made into the decoration of the lamp. A chest of drawers divided and put together again so it looks like it defies gravity. Mirror balls re here put together into a chandelier that makes confetti of light in the room. The light shining through the thin ajar of a slightly open door made into the decoration - when you open the door the light switches of. A cupboard built out of turning advertising signs so the expression of its surface changes.

Offset

Through an in-built lever activated by a mechanical pumping device, the table adjusts to any height. The lever itself is integrated into offset's minimalist design. It reacts to the manual command and acts on order, moving its legs out to create the stability needed for heavy-weight loads. When not in duty, the lever can be stored inside the surface, making Offset blend back into its elegant and peaceful surrounding.

PICTURE WINDOW HOUSE - Shizuoka, Japan, 2001

A gentle hill continues up from the ocean's edge, and near its peak is the location of the site; a place that, amazingly in Japan, is uncluttered by any unsightly distractions. The first time I set foot on the site, my immediate response was to frame the wonderful view of the ocean stretching horizontally. That is to say that the building itself should become a picture window. Also, to prevent the architecture from becoming an obstacle disrupting the natural sense of flow from the ocean, I've thought of maintaining that continuity by passing it through the building up to the woods at the top of the hill. Thus, the whole upper storey became a truss spanning 20 meters, and below, a 20 meter by 2.5 meter picture window was created.
