The desk lamp features a Touch-O-MaticTM dimmer: just touch the overhead suspension or the carbon-fiber rod to turn the light on or dim it. Titania Pendant lamp

A pioneer 16 years ago, today it is a lighting classic. The Titania pendulum hanging lamp by Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto. Floating overhead on barely visible threads, Titania’s soft aluminum fins shine white or – with included color filters –  yellow, green, red, blue or purple, without changing light intensity. Fully height adjustable via integrated pendulum.
Now Titania has a – very – big sister: Queen Titania XXL. Doubled dimensions create a true lamp giant, perfect for your reception area or conference room. Due to its large proportions, the height is fixed once installed and the XXL is delivered without a counterweight pendulum. An optional color filter set (2 each in red, green and blue) is also available.

Low Structural Cost - High Strength. Shipping containers offer a huge structural strength for a fraction of the cost of traditional timber steel and concrete constructions. Because all the strength is contained in the structural elements themselves, the foundation design is simpler and less expensive. These two factors leave more room in the budget for exterior finishes and interior design, allowing luxurious appointment with contemporary design materials.

Shrink this House

It’s relatively easy to put an addition on a house. But what about subtracting from a house? Above is an illustration of a home being built from the ground up on a dry, 9,500-square-foot lot on Hibiscus Island in Miami Beach. This is a beautiful, two-story contemporary house, designed by EAV Architect and Daniel Latour Interior Design, and built by Latour. It has 5,687 square feet of enclosed space (under air conditioning), with a four-car garage that has its own elevator. There are five bedrooms. The master suite, on the second floor, is 1,200 square feet with a 500-square-foot balcony. The suite includes two walk-in closets, two vanities, an enclosed toilet and bidet, a two-person bath tub and a two-person shower. All parts of the master suite have a view of the water. There’s a 2,500-square-foot entertainment terrace on the roof with its own kitchen. And the fittings throughout are superluxe: Dornbracht, Duravit, Axor, Subzero, Miele, Viking. Yes, it’s beautiful. But let’s consider some numbers. In 1950, the average size of a new home that year was 983 square feet; 96 percent of the homes built had one bathroom or less. That was when the average size of the American family was four. Today the average family is three people, and the average size of a new home is 2,434 square feet; 39 percent of those homes have four or more bedrooms. The house above, at 5,687 square feet, is at the upper end of the spectrum, but there are new houses in Florida that are 10,000 square feet or more.
How about cutting it down to something more managable, like 2,000 square feet? So sit down to your computers (the specs and floorplans are on our Web site, www.floridainsideout.com, under Competition # 3), and start remodeling. We’ll give you just one hint. Often the next big trend is the one thing that no one is doing anymore. Let’s hear your solutions to whittling this house down to a manageable size, and making it appropriate for the sunny life in South Florida. (Don’t forget to make it hurricane proof, too.) The contest will end June 15, and the winning entries will be announced in our September-October issue.

Interior Design Trends 2007

The market for the interior design sector is saturated to the greatest possible extent. In order to achieve additional market share despite this, the sector is expanding its identity through the opening up of new areas of application. Design always plays an increasingly important role in this, as innovation and design are amongst the key factors when it comes to overcoming market saturation tendencies. Quality of design is – especially in the light of globalised markets – one of the most important differentiation characteristics in the face of the competition.
Due to the current uneasy market conditions, many manufacturers limit themselves to proven product lines, which they then diversify. The result is an innovations block and the consequences are that, in the area of home accessories, products are brought onto the market on a trial basis in many different types of styles, to cater to as many tastes as possible. A dominating trend can hardly be noticed in these circumstances.

Ofuros tub system

You can also experience a Japanese ofuro bath at your home now. This is a very sophisticated product which enhances your home ambiance. It can be used either inside or outside, and it doesn't require any special electrical and plumbing. The ofuro is handcrafted in Brazilian cedar, a hard wood that contains therapeutical properties. It is all built with tongue and groove without any other fasteners. The factory Acqualive, in the South of Brazil, manufactures ofuro vats according to the traditional Japanese ways, using carefully selected wood which has been designated for production under the guidelines of the National ecological Board.

Asian Therapy

The cedar tree can reach up to 135 feet height and 7 feet diameter; its cylindrical trunk is long, straight or a bit twisted; its spreading branches produce a high and frondose crown. Its internal bark is reddish with pleasant scent. The cedar stands out among the most appreciated Brazilian woods for trading and export, but the cut of trees remains under regulation. Cedar wood is similar to the mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), but its texture is softer and thicker making possible the most diversified uses; it is very appreciated for housing refined wooden finishing, for wooden tubs manufacturer. In the popular medicine, and indigenous culture it is used as tonic, as an astringent, for fever, and treatment of wounds and ulcers. Cedar species are proper for public squares, parks and groves. It is also used to re-establish degraded ecosystems and recovery of lands close to rivers and water streams which are subject to floods.

Modern Fountain

Designed after a classic feature by Garrett Eckbo. These spill basins are crafted from spun copper and finished in a matte black powdercoat. The water fills the upper 18” shallow basin, then spills over its formed lip into the lower basin of the same size. As the water spills into the pool below, a flush mounted submersible light catches and illuminates the stream of water, casting refracted ripples of light onto the ceiling above and into the adjacent living room. A submersible recirculating system operates the effect silently, efficiently.

Buttefly

This light came from the idea of folding a piece of paper. The function of its adjustment of light and the space created by that are a result of simple action of one surface (the panel) being divided by two. The two panels with slight shifts to each other at its closed position remind a user to open this object up. This light gives the poetic theme to the space like a butterfly flying around with silence.

Ernestomeda Kitchens

Europeans take their kitchens seriously, and for the highlights of today’s most fabulous kitchen trends we need only look at Ernestomeda’s broad range of kitchens. A youthful Italian kitchen firm, Ernestomeda bring innovation, quality and style into their kitchens. They are at the forefront of design with their use of colour, dramatic lighting, frosted glass cabinets and free-standing units, as well as fabulous new materials. With such a broad range of styles and trends there is literally something wonderful for everyone. The Silverbox kitchen uses a bright blue glass as vivid accent, but also displays the trendy stave pattern we’ve been seeing more of. The Silverbox uses the strong horizontal element to expand the kitchen and provide a uniform character. The aluminium stave doors provide a fantastic texture over which shadows richly play. The striped metal kitchen is modern and sleek. The kitchen island is topped with laminate work surface, and hanging above is a counter length extractor edged in electric blue glass. The glass detailing continues in the island sink backsplash. By mixing materials and textures the Silverbox presents a modern European kitchen.

Modern Aluminum

Melt Modern offers custom work tailored to your individual needs as well as a limited collection of limited in-stock products. We personally make each piece by hand, ensuring that no two are identical. While the basic shape and dimensions are consistent throughout a line, the surface texture, wall thickness and exterior edges vary considerably from piece to piece. Many of our products utilize cast aluminum due to its desirable characteristics. Cast aluminum has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is a practical material that can be used outdoors as well as in (an exterior salt air environment is not recommended). Aluminum will subtly reflect the colors around it. A wall piece will take on a yellow glow as the morning sun pours in and will change throughout the day as the light travels about the room. In a white, minimalist room, the aluminum surfaces take on an introspective Zen-like quality with subtle variations of shadow resting on a monochromatic surface. In a garden or room with colorful paintings, walls or carpets, the aluminum will glow with reflected color.

Fred Eerdekens' works

Yet, another religious/art item.
Entering the artistic space of Fred Eerdekens places the spectator in a semantic landscape in which what one had thought of as stable meanings are continually twisted and turned. What better way to figurize this than by letting the spectators themselves 'twist and turn' in trying to make sense of the objects. In spiralling around the objects, they in fact become direct figures of the play of logic that rules the objects. After the linguistic turn, and in the wake of post-structuralist thought, the topography of our mental landscapes has become increasingly intricate. The work of Fred Eerdekens attests to this fact and it provides a conceptual map of this, in many places still unknown territory.

Modern Red Cross in CT

The Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross purchased a rundown garage/office building. The goal for the architects was to transform the building into a regional headquarters for their staff, programs and vehicles. The three-story stair tower addition serves as the unifying design element. Steel awnings provide a welcome entrance at either level. The red and white color scheme was a cost-effective solution to designing on a tight budget.

Sonic Structure

Sonic Structure I is an installation composed of hand-Jacquard woven cotton and copper, and an electronic circuit that measures changes in electro-magnetic frequencies as a viewer touches the cloth. As the changing frequencies enter an audible range they are heard through the speakers mounted on the wall near the weavings. The patterning on the cloth is created from measuring frequencies of a pre-recorded sound and building a matrix from the derived values that correspond to the number of warp threads on the Jacquard loom used.

Mid century Modern house

Mid-century Modern House as Large Scale Structure, Washington, D.C., by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, with Prill Construction, contractor. The project entailed renovating a mid-century Modern house, originally designed by noted D.C. architect Clothiel Woodard Smith in the 1950s. The architects thoroughly updated the house, while its scale and character—including a unique parking place—were respected. Most of the renovation focused on the interior. The architects opened up the main living space by raising the ceiling and replacing solid walls with glass. The team also installed a large deck and infinity pool just beyond the main living area, to extend space and the views out the back. The architects also enlarged and better defined the previous hidden entry. “We love the carport” is a phrase you don’t expect to hear from the jurors in an architecture competition. In their comments, though, the jurors made it clear they greatly admired the highly visible, linear structure in the front of this house that presents itself as a large scale structure.
