From sketches to real chairs....

The Furniture for Production students at CCA are totally hitting their stride in the class we’re hosting. They’ve been sketching furiously and presented their best of three drawings two weeks ago. Their next challenge was to pick one to focus on and creating a ¼ scale model of it. They presented these scale models last week. The details in the chairs are so cool. And I can’t help it, but aren’t all small things adorable?

XX Chair

The starting point for this design was the famous film-director's chair. This was broken down into two identical "I" sections in diecast aluminium, crossed in the form of an "X" and joined with fabric, net or leather. The visual ease and elegance of the initial prototypes was amazing.

Sofa TT

This sofa is CFC free expanded polyurethane foam with steel inlay and shell in solid polyurethane, internal void injected with CFC free polyurethane foam and steel inlay. Legs in die-cast polished aluminum. Seat and back with removable Kvadrat fabric in a range of modern colors.

SEC shelf system

In designing the structural components of the SEC system for Alias, Alfredo Häberli and Christophe Marchand conceded nothing to levity or chance. Two heights only for the elements of the uprights, two measurements only for their width and depth. This limited vocabulary is joined by equally simple standardized elements for the interlocking and attachment of the parts. An open system for mutable furniture, constantly changing, in vital transformation.

Segesta Multi Purpose chair

Segesta is a multipurpose chair that can be used both inside and outside. The use of a new plastic technology Hirek© and the strong character of the design, combined with the flexibility of the back rest and its stackability, are the basis for the enormous success of this chair. The length of the armrest was intentional so it would fit well at a dining table or serve as a more relaxed armchair. The multiplicity of its use is nearly endless, and the variety of the support frames adds even more possibilities.

Egon Eiermann SE 42 Chair

The curved wooden chair from Prof. Eiermann. A work of art on three legs.
Seat and back made from multi-layered wood veneer. Three-dimensional, organically contoured seat.

Designer of the week- Charles & Ray Eames

Design is for living. That maxim shaped a widespread shift in design during the 1940s and 1950s. It was a revolution of form, an exciting visual language that signaled a new age and a fresh start -- and two of its prime movers were Charles and Ray Eames. The Eameses were a husband and wife team whose unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Sleek, sophisticated and simple. Beautifully functional.
Yet Charles and Ray Eames created more than a "look" with their bent plywood chairs or molded fiberglass seating. They had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to fulfill the practical needs of ordinary people and bring greater simplicity and pleasure to our lives.

The Eameses adventurously pursued new ideas and forms with a sense of "serious fun." Yet, it was rigorous discipline that allowed them to achieve perfection of form and mastery over materials. As Charles noted about the molded plywood chair, "Yes, it was a flash of inspiration," he said, "a kind of 30-year flash." Combining imagination and thought, art and science, Charles and Ray Eames created some of the most influential expressions of 20th century design--furniture that remains stylish, fresh and functional today.

And they didn't stop with furniture. The Eameses also created a highly innovative "case study" house in response to a magazine contest. They made films, including a seven-screen installation at the 1959 Moscow World's Fair, presented in a dome designed by Buckminster Fuller. They designed showrooms, invented toys and generally made the world a more interesting place to be.

As the most important exponents of organic design, Charles and Ray Eames demonstrated how good design can improve quality of life and human understanding and knowledge.

Destroy all Monsters

When we have Godzilla symbolizing the nuclear attacks on Japan and Astro Boy (or Mighty Atom as he's known in Japan) the triumph of good vs evil, justice and inocence. For Japan, the boy robot became a symbol of the nation's resurgence. Junichi Murakami, who runs the OsamuTezuka Manga Museum, says many Japanese companies use Astro Boy's image as the symbol of high-quality, made-in-Japan products.Thirteen years of economic decline and political scandal have robbed the Japanese of self-confidence, and there is a desperate urge to find local heroes. A boy robot with rocket-powered boots remains the perfect idol and at the same time, focusing on one aspect of modern civilization: the idea that science could bring us a wonderful world. Now that we talked about the post nuclear monsters and Astro Boy interpretations. Enter the big 4 meter high robo-warrior sentai (in this iteration made of wood in order to get the molds in fiberglass) The term "sentai," meaning "task force," refers to superheroes who battle a sinister presence bent on conquering the world with hordes of generic foot soldiers and weekly monsters. But although sentai dates back to 1975's Goranger, its traditions have themselves been borrowed from prior works within the Japanese category of filmmaking known as tokusatsu. What follows is a series of tokusatsu milestones which have contributed to make sentai what it is today. Including Ultra Man and Mazinger Z among others. Carlos conjures the mysticism, religious values and tall tales from latin America to create the next issue of what we are going to see. A series of unique monsters, so far 50 are already done in paper and production will start in early 2007

Marshmallow Sofa

Marshmallow Sofa

designed by George Nelson, 1956, made by Herman Miller Furniture Co. This design offered a pragmatic solution for the factory mass-production of upholstered seating... the cushions are standard barstool seats, vinyl covered foam cushions in bright colors, sometimes more than one color in the sofa. This sofa could be made in any length, and as many as ten cushions side by side were made. The sofa shown above is a current production item offered by Herman Miller.

Gordon low chair

The idea began with the need to utilise a production possibility. The result was a light and comfortable armchair with armrests, for outside or inside. The product is easy to manufacture – laser, bend, rivet – and very flexible, features that lend this design a special character.

Tauromachia wall cloth stand

This clothesstand is in need of support, but its shape enables it to lean against the wall without having to be fastened to it. It consists of only five parts, and is easily assembled with just four bolts. A minimum of resources have been used in achieving a maximum of functionality, and this means in turn that it is light in weight. It can be carried away and set up somewhere else at any time.

Skaia table

One always visualises a table surrounded by chairs, not standing alone as shown in the design brochures. I wanted to bring a feeling of floating into the gestalt by using a thick tabletop, 60 mm, and slender wire legs. Surrounded by chairs with similar legs increases the visual effect and the table top seems to hover in the air.

Nails wire chair

To make a chair made of titanium wire was one of my dreams. A chair made of very, very little wire is the reality. The wires of the seat run lengthwise, and this detail (all other benches and chairs run crosswise!) makes comfortable sitting possible with less wire. Surely you know why. And up till now no other designer has seen it this way.

A sketch, an unfinished drawing is something wonderful. While working on Nais, the chair was always in front of me - in graphite. The plan was to execute it in titanium, an idea that has persevered since the first sketch.

Cappellini XX chair

The starting point for this design was the famous film-director's chair. This was broken down into two identical "I" sections in diecast aluminium, crossed in the form of an "X" and joined with fabric, net or leather. The visual ease and elegance of the initial prototypes was amazing.

Hang By Hand

In 1995 I was asked to design a coat hanger for Dirade. My idea was to use the same technology as that used for PET bottles. Following many discussions with various sub-distributors and the production of a large number of models and drawings, we reached the conclusion that, at the time, the technology was still to costly. Two years later Marc Newson managed it with Magis. For the past two years I have been working on a new coat hanger with a small element of added value. Every day we handle products like tooth brushes, key rings, mobiles or the computer mouse. Yet we continue to remove coat hangers from the wardrobe by holding on to the item of clothing. The novelty and added value of this product is the handle. In future this new technology will be well-known and inexpensive.

Take a line for a walk

The modelling method of rapid prototyping served as the starting point for this design. At the time, I was reading a book about Paul Klee in which he said that when he was drawing, it was like taking the line for a walk. This expression gave me the final theme (see Illustration 1): to design a lightweight structure for a lounge chair with enormous wings. The upholstered version of this came a year later. To be able to sit in it without being concerned about one's shoes was a small detail in this autonomous structure.

Mesquite wall tiles

The Mesquite program offers a unique blend of warmth and organic with a modern twist. Mesquite is a very dense wood with minimal absorption and warpage, making it the best option for wood tiles.

Just add color!

Back in the '50's, the Frigidaire appliance company commissioned Anchor Hocking to create an eight-ounce glass for them featuring their "Decorator Colors". The promotional piece served a dual purpose: marked in one-ounce increments, it could be used as a handy measuring cup and splashed in the most fashinable appliacnce colors of the day: sunny yelloy, mayfair pink and turquoise, it could stir the desire of consumers to replace their dreary white refrigerator with a nappy, happy new one from Frigidaire.
Fifty years later, mid century optimism seems to have given way to 21st century cynicism. Over the last decade, kitchen design has gotten "serious" taking a 180 degree turn away from the vibrant days of yore.

The work of Erwin Hauer

Introducing Continua, The Erwin Hauer Studios Product Line Erwin Hauer, Austrian-born sculptor and Professor Emeritus from Yale University, has formed a new partnership, Erwin Hauer Studios, with three designers from the
New Haven, Connnecticut area. The company's purpose is to re-issue and redefine a selection of Hauer's 1950s architectural screens using digital technology and production methods. Its product line, the Continua series, has four screens in production, each with different light-diffusing properties. Each design is also available in custom configurations, variable in scale, panel size, and material. The current line will be showcased by Erwin Hauer Studios at the 2006 International Contemporary Furniture Fair held May 20-23 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Additional screen designs are forthcoming. There was a considerable resurgence of interest in Hauer's screens following the 2004 publication of Erwin Hauer: Continua--Architectural Screens and Walls, which included stunning photographs of the works. A press release from the publisher, Princeton Architectural Press, said: “This book resurrects the extraordinary but littleknown work of this sculptor, whose designs of perforated and modular structures are symphonies of measured elegance. Built in Austria, Canada, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands Antilles, Venezuela, and the U.S., Hauer's architectural walls and
screens caused a stir when they were erected in the 1950s, but have since been lost in time." Graceful and sensual, with distinctly clean lines, the screens suggest the solidity of organic forms and the fluidity of music. Asserting that music has always been his main inspiration, Hauer says his architectural screen designs are ”cantabile, with
formal aspects akin to theme melodies or repetition-with-variation motifs."

Osorom by Konstantin Grcic

The circular seating system by Konstantin Grcic is a skilful combination of emptiness and lightness. An environmental sculpture which boasts airiness wherever placed; its frame, a combination of fibreglass and resin, conveys an idea of visual transparency.

Kundalini

Hara is a bio-energetic seat handmade in lacquered fibreglass. Also ideal for outdoors thanks to the protection against ultra-violet rays and to the strong resistance of thermal excursion material.
Kundalini was born of this inspiration in 1996: light
not only illuminates the ambience around us, but also
our inner self; besides being designed, light in turn
designs our perception of the world and of life itself. This intuition is seldom explored with awareness
and intention in contemporary design, spearheads
the philosophy of Kundalini production, our

The background
Mosley meets Wilcox meets Rock is a collection of objects created by Mosley meets Wilcox (Steve Mosley and Dominic Wilcox), inspired by the work of Rock photographer Mick Rock and the world of Rock music.
After a chance meeting with Mick Rock at one of his photo shoots, Steve Mosley and Dominic Wilcox started an investigation into the idea of creating a range of objects inspired by Mick Rock images. Over a series of weeks they met up with Mick Rock to show ideas, sketches and prototypes. The first preview exhibition of the collection was at the Hanbury Gallery in the East end of London (09/2004).As part of the collection Mosley meets Wilcox also developed two works inspired by rock music itself (Plectrum Light and Music Machine). The collaborative nature of the collection continued when Mosley meets Wilcox teamed up with legendary shoe designer Terry de Havilland to create a set of shoes and boots.
