House of Canvas

A house in an east Amsterdam neighborhood was recently renovated in tribute to the beloved local avant-garde artist Karel Appel. The architects at DUS borrowed from his vivid pallet to turn Dapperstraat 7, the home Appel was born in, into six small studios complete with an ingenious tuck-away kitchen. The design boldly delineates the spaces, visually increasing the size of the interior space and allowing the rooms to take on multiple uses.

show house by a-cero

In this occasion A-cero has chosen a different façade from the Madrid show house. In that way people can see different options that A-cero offers with these modular houses. This time A-cero has designed a combination of black glass with panels of white aluminum Larson composite. The house has a modern and clean design with the same avant-garde style of the modular house already built in Madrid (that one has a black glass facade). However, the new modular house has a freshness and clarity touch due to the white colour. Also, the white gravel in the house’s surface accentuates this luminosity sensation. This material is a very affordable and comfortable solution for the owners. Apart form the “closing extra”, this house has been presented without extras in order to emphasize the house´s structure and give the main role to the excellent quality of its materials and finished.

the funnel lamp

It might be a bloodline bias that has got me believing the Swedes design the perfect balance of smart-modern and clean-practical everything, but I can’t help it. Perhaps the true test of a country’s design ability stems from the quality of its infrastructure. Regardless of my hypotheses, there’s WIS Design - a bright, young duo out of Stockholm - who are measuring up to the high standards.

Mauro 3100 Bench

Just because NeoCon10 is in the history books doesn’t mean we should ignore the persistent push toward more functional public spaces. Just look around at the commercial location you may presently inhabit: you’re sure to see manifold functional defects—the likes of which Spain’s Figueras International Seating could remedy lickety split. To wit, beautiful Barcelona’s T1 airport terminal required well-proportioned seating that made good use of available space while possessing an aesthetic worthy of the city of Dalí and Gaudí. The response? Figueras’ 3100 Mauro Bench System by Marta Vilallonga.

balanced shelf

Fascinated by movement and balance, as many of us are, German designer Christian Kim marries aesthetics with movement for a shelf that can go from being a horizontal row of cube shelves to one that is set on the diagonal.
